Videoconferencing – The key to a successful remote workforce

Aug 14, 2020

Videoconferencing has become an essential component of a business’s arsenal. With an increasingly remote workforce, multiple offices, distant clients and overseas suppliers the need for effective communication remains one of the hidden keys to unlocking success.

Being able to communicate your message to staff, clients, prospects, suppliers, investors – in real-time – is absolutely critical in today’s complicated fast moving world.

We’ve all heard of videoconferencing, which is a live connection between people in separate locations for the purpose of communication, usually involving audio and video.

At its simplest, videoconferencing provides transmission of static images and text between two locations. At its most sophisticated, it provides transmission of full-motion video images and high-quality audio between multiple locations. Enhancing ability to record session, easily share files, etc.

Videoconferencing hardware and software is quickly becoming part of standard business operating equipment.

For personal use, free or inexpensive video-conference software and a digital camera provides the user an easy to use – and cheap – platform to connect live with family and friends. Although the audio and video quality of such a minimal set up is low, the combined benefits of live contact and long-distance savings may justify the means.

However having said that in the world of small to medium size companies, many are putting up with a sub-standard videoconferencing experience by sticking to FREE services.

The tangible benefits for businesses using video conferencing include lower travel costs, reduced meeting time for staff and clients (no travel time to build in so can do more in a day) and the list goes on.

With the average SMB business the intangible benefits of high quality video including better communication are often not taken into consideration. The enterprise business space still seems to have an edge and it’s not because of technology affordability. There are some extremely powerful – low cost – video-conference solutions in the market today.

Think about the power of face to face meetings. The power of being able to look at an individual or group who you are relaying your message. Being able to read their body language, establish rapport and in fact the reverse, them being able to see you and do all the same things means the message is much stronger.

There are major shifts coming to the high-intensity collaboration market space, so try not to fall into the old Ostrich stance and put up with the FREE solutions.

Keep your mind open to lower cost solutions which deliver a better experience hence improving the delivery of your message – whatever that maybe.

As for what’s next in this market space, will it be screens on your bathroom mirror that send vital stats straight to your doctor’s office, triggering the next step. Or increased intelligence could help by recognising your face and voice so you can securely bring up files verbally to collaborate. Or take your client for a virtual tour of the factory (in another state, another country). Or speaking with your team in the field through your wrist watch.

There are many possibilities but the one thing you can count on is that technological change is already here, so make sure you have a plan to embrace it.
